Adapting to a New Culture Video (6:57) and Three Companion Resources
A public performance license for “Adapting to a New Culture,” a Pioneer Living video exploring the emotional stages every newcomer moves through — euphoria, culture shock, adjustment, and adaptation — featuring insight drawn from the original PBS Plus series hosted by Pat Morita. Includes a companion Teacher & Facilitator Resource with vocabulary, discussion questions, and a modern research update, useful for classrooms, orientation sessions, and one-on-one casework. Also includes two PowerPoint presentations for staff development, employee onboarding, college-level social studies, migration, public policy and psychology courses.
Every person who has ever moved to a new country, city, or community has felt some version of this arc: the excitement of something new, the frustration when daily life gets hard, and eventually, a sense of belonging that includes both where they came from and where they are now. “Adapting to a New Culture” puts language to that experience, drawing on decades of cross-cultural psychology and Pioneer Living’s own archive of interviews with people who lived it firsthand.
This license includes:
- The video, licensed for public performance in classrooms, orientation sessions, staff trainings, and community programs. Length: 6 min. 57 sec.
- A companion Teacher & Facilitator Resource covering the classic stages of cultural adaptation alongside a “Then & Now” look at how technology, translation apps, affordable travel, and large multicultural communities have changed the adjustment process for today’s newcomers.
- Vocabulary list, comprehension quiz, discussion questions, and answer key, so the resource works whether you’re leading a class, training new staff, or handing it directly to someone going through the experience right now.
-
Two PowerPoint presentations - "The Arc of Belonging - Understanding Expatriates and International Professionals" and "Rethinking Cultural Adaptation: For Educators & Psychologists."
